Five tribes from the desert beyond the mountains discovered the country that is now called Melluma. The land was green and fertile, unlike the desert they had come from. These five tribes, already tied together by blood and marriage, decided that this was a good place to settle and become farmers instead of the nomads they had been. They learned the art of planting from the few people who already lived there and they introduced their cattle and other domestic animals in return. They also married with the first inhabitants of this lush green plain so that in the end, six different people became one: the Mellumans.
However, the five tribes continued to exist for each worshipped one god over all the others. The fire tribe was favored by the Firestarter, the unpredictable, yet needed god of fire. The wind tribe was watched over by the Windcaller, the god who could bring either good or ill will on the winds. The water tribe was loved by the Waterbringer, the lady that brought the precious rains and ruled the desert oases, but could be terrible if she wanted to be. The earth tribe was the beloved of the Earth Mother, who was more forgiving here in these new lands than in the desert they had come from.
Then there was the smallest tribe of them all, which had no name, but was favored by the Lady of all. She was all the elements, yet none of them and she was more androgynous than female, but they still called her a she and a lady. A strange being their god was, but again, a strange tribe they were as well for as small as they were, they were the most respected.
But Melluma was not yet a country, even after generations of people living on the plains, reproducing and growing larger, creating a social structure. They lived in villages and there was only one large city, where the shrines of the gods were. Then, the gods decided to gift the people of the plains by giving them sacred children, from whom all of the high priests would descend from and for the smallest tribe, the sacred child would also be the first ruler of what was to be Melluma.
One child was to be born to each tribe, but when the child for the fire tribe was born, there was not one child born, but twins. This is where all the trouble started, but the conflicts that followed made the country what it was, so perhaps the twins were meant to be instead of an accident.
